We are pleased to announce that Morello Giovanni has developed two battery powered wind turbine blades transporters to transport the world’s longest wind turbine blade: 107 metres.
To transport this extremely long blade, it was necessary to design 2 powered modular machines, each with a 60 tonne capacity, able to move in a synchronised manner at a distance of more than 80 metres apart!
Our software developers took on an extremely stimulating challenge in order to ensure the two wind turbine blades transporters were able to communicate and automatically correct their trajectories at such a wide distance apart and carrying such a flexible load.
Considering, among other things, that the two transporters are able to make many types of manoeuvres, both individually and when linked: rotation around their own axis, lateral movement, diagonal movement, etc.
Given they are omni-directional, they are able to transport the wind turbine blade extremely efficiently, even in relatively tight spaces.
Both wind turbine blades transporters have a liftable loading bed. This characteristic is essential to ensure the blades, laid on dedicated supports, can be transported completely autonomously, that is, without the use of truck or bridge cranes. Thanks to these carts, it is therefore possible to move the blades around the production plant, in the external paved area and in the dock from where they are shipped.
These powered machines are also equipped with hydraulic suspensions, useful for working on uneven terrain without damaging the transported load.
One particularly important feature of these wind turbine blades transporters is their power source: they are in fact battery powered. A clean, entirely non-polluting energy source was one of the client’s main requests, given they work in the renewable energy sector and are therefore particularly sensitive to environmental aspects.
The turbine on which this blade will be assembled is the most powerful wind turbine in the world, to date. It is an offshore wind turbine with 12 MW of power, to be installed in the middle of the sea.
This 12 MW turbine can generate 67GWh of clean energy each year, equivalent to the average energy needs of 16,000 European homes.
